Purano shei diner kotha…
Ganges is a river extraordinaire. Bhupen Hazarika immortalized the Ganges with his song ‘O Ganga tumi boicho keno?’ She embodies the quintessence of a civilization, form of a rich cultural heritage and the essence of a faith fascinating. Ganges to us is a Goddess who is alive in our collective conscience, whose significance in the day – to – day life cannot be put in words.
The Britishers made Kolkata, the capital of India along the Ganges, with the thought that their concept of London built along the river Thames will have some similarity. Right from Diamond Harbour to Raichak to Pujali and further down to Fort William, all their bastions and storehouses had a singular skew.
North Kolkata developed along the river Ganges also. Swami Vivekananda’s Belur Math, is situated across the Ganges. The Dakhineswar Temple is also situated on the banks of the Ganges.
